Mercury is a serious neurotoxic agent, and the control monitoring of emissions are important. Optical spectroscopy powerful technique for measurement mercury, which in atmosphere predominantly appears atomic form. The mercury resonance line close to 254 nm can be utilized long-path absorption measurements average concentrations or light detection ranging (lidar) studies, where range-resolved concentration values obtained. In addition, point monitors often use optical detection, frequently after pre-concentration, as well compounds conjunction with denuders, transfer into mercury. present review discusses methods respect merits sensitivity interference. main focus on remote-sensing techniques, many examples from industrial mining given. Further, related extraction geothermal energy discussed. Finally, an example archaeology—the Qin tomb Xi’an—is presented. Advanced techniques help shaping environment largely free contamination. aspect being important geophysical tracer gas also exploited.
